Cycle for Science

Cycle for Science, Amsterdam – Barcelona, Friday April 22nd – Sunday May 1st 2016

Cycling for Science, in the defense of life. In the first edition of Cycle for Science a group of 40 orthopedic surgeons, coming from all over the world, cycled from Amsterdam to Barcelona.

Cycle for Science is an intiative of former ESSKA president Niek van Dijk. With this event he wanted to underline the importance of motion as a cornerstone for a healthy life.

The tour consisted of eight stages, which brought the participants from the 2014 ESSKA hosting city, Amsterdam, to the 2016 ESSKA congress in Barcelona. During the tour in each city there was a symposium with renowned speakers. The symposia focused on prevention of osteoarthritis, joint disease and sports injuries and the positive effect of exercise. The cyclist concurred the Alpe d'Huez, the Mont Ventoux and the Pyrenees.

The initiative will continue with 'Cycle for Joints' organized by AGA in September 2017 with a tour from Basel to Münich. In 2018 Cycle for Science will tour from Barcelona to Glasgow, the host city for the 2018 ESSKA Congress (www.esska.org).
